Matera is a UNESCO world heritage site protected for it's unique 'Sassi', cave houses dug ino the rock faces of a steep valley. Matera is also where the crucifiction scene of 'The Passion of the Christ' was filmed.
Guided tours are available, in English also, and when we went cost €?? Look for the guide with the little dog, he's very good and was born in the town. He may also let you get away with taking a few photos where you can't usually.
